AFSB recognise Indigenous people as the traditional custodians and occupants of our land and water, and that they have a spiritual, environmental, social, cultural and economic relationship with their traditional fish and fisheries. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
The ASFB Conference 2024 was held in Newcastle, NSW, from November 18th to 21st. Delegates enjoyed the laid-back coastal vibes, tasty restaurants, great bars and live music.
The conference venue was in the city’s premier function spot – the Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre (NEX) – walking distance to beaches, burritos, breweries, and beds.
This year's theme, 'Fish Frontiers' featured the suite of contemporary research and management talks across freshwater and marine ecosystems that ASFB is renowned for, however this year also featured special sessions and themes involving:
Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Stock assessment and Harvest Strategies
Challenges and risks and fisheries management
Innovations in habitat restoration
Advancing Fish Passage
Fish protection screening
Extreme frontiers - understanding and managing fish and aquatic ecosystems in a more extreme world
Big beasts, gentle souls - Australian Freshwater cods
Conservation of Threatened Species
Diversity, inclusivity and excellence in our society and more broadly
Innovative and ethical tagging of animals in research
Three-minute theses from some of our leading student members
Our hope was to bridge tradition and innovation as we continued our collective exploration of new discoveries, ideas, visions and best practices.
Together, we can chart a course for a more sustainable future for fish and people!
